US Presidential Election: The Lesser Evil

If the reputation of politicians in the UK is that they are dishonest, selfish and disconnected from the struggles of the common person, then politicians in the US might view their UK peers as being beloved by the public. Take for example, Boris Johnson’s nonsense rambling and unnatural personality is perceived as being ridiculous but harmless, even if some of the rubbish that he spurts has questionable motives behind it.

In comparison to this, the chubby ginger cat who sadly runs the US, otherwise known as Donald Trump, crosses the line so often that it’s surprising that he hasn’t built a wall to keep him over there. Now to the competent person, the notion of a wildly homophobic, sexist, ignorant and in the most part stupid man being the most powerful individual in the world is terrifying, generating the same fear you might have if you were to see a young child crossing a busy road unaided. The gut-wrenching expectation for something catastrophic to happen at any moment you would suspect would be enough for most mindful individuals to eliminate from their minds the slightest slimmer of an intention to vote for Mr Trump.

Yet, it isn’t. Sadly, in this so-called woke world that we currently live in, the idea that such an abhorrent individual can retain his status as the most powerful man in the world is undeniably plausible and perhaps even likely. As regretfully, in the United States, the worlds most dominant superpower portrayed as a haven for individuals to prosper, for every individual with judgements based on moral values and human decency - individuals that befit the name of being human - there is sorrowfully just as many individuals who view the aggressive targeting of minority groups as being something that should be heavily supported and celebrated. Now there are many different names that are given to such individuals, with their own preference being either republicans or patriots, however I myself can think of many other more profanities that better suit such entities.

Upon second glance at that behemoth of a first paragraph it could be said that I may have allowed my emotions to get the better of me instead of writing a fair piece that gives equal respect to both sides of the argument. After taking some time out to reflect on this I have come to the conclusion that I should try my best to refrain from targeting Trump supporters for their lack of intelligence and human decency, and instead perhaps suggest that there is a glimmer of a possibility for them to be alright people after all.

Politics in the US differs greatly from politics here in the UK. To begin with, the entire voting system which leads to the election of a President is far more complicated in comparison to the first past the post system which has been adopted in the UK. The Electoral College in the US can appear tricky and confusing to those who have not come across it before but its purpose is to provide a result which is proportionate to population numbers within each state, hence leading to what should be deemed as fairer result. However, its validity is still greatly contested every time an election rolls around, but this tends to be nothing merely more the losers using it as an excuse for their defeat.

One other huge difference between British and American politics is the role that their figureheads take, and the powers that subsequently come with them. In the UK, although they might appear as the individual with the greatest power in this country, in actual fact they merely act as a states person on behalf of the UK, with their power being reliant on the dominance of their party over the House of Commons. Their American counterpart however has genuine powers that are unique to their role, hence making their role much more important. The importance of this role escalates the necessity for Americans to take careful consideration when appointing their next leader, and their leaders in years to come.
